Engonopoulos, best known as Greece’s surrealist painter par excellence, was also among a number of artists who participated in a pioneering effort to revitalize and modernize the Geek stage beginning in the late 1930s. His involvement with theatre design began in 1938 and continued until 1968. He designed lively, colourful sets and costumes for many works of ancient drama, as well as plays by Molière, Kazantzakis, Shaw and Brecht.
