Footnotes

  • A series of six prints of the parable of 'The Prodigal Son' was used on pots by William Greatbatch at Fenton in Stoke-on-Trent. Teapots, including ones of this shape, showing the whole series are illustrated by David Barker, William Greatbatch a Staffordshire Potter, figs. 141a-144b, pp. 230-231. The source for the prints is given by Barker as a series of mezzotints by Richard Purcell after engravings of paintings 'L'Histoire de l'enfant prodigue' by Sebastien le Clerc II, published in Paris in 1751, q.v. p. 229.
