A highly important Cambrian Jug
Sold for £28,800 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • Provenance: Old collection label inscribed 'April 26/1900, Wills', Morton Nance Collection. Illustrated by Morton Nance (1942), plate XXIIA and B and discussed at p59. The source print is an illustration in George Shaw's General Zoology. Two other similarly decorated jugs are known, a smaller and less elaborately decorated example in the National Museum and Gallery of Wales at Cardiff and a third referred to by Morton Nance. Both of these are marked 'Swansea' in overglaze blue enamel. The gilded 'Cambrian' mark seen on this lot may indicate a superior item intended for the London market. Contrast the painting on this lot with a mug illustrated by Andrew Renton, Welsh Ceramics in Context (2003), p 129 and attributed to William Weston Young
