Footnotes

  • This, John's first letter to his father, was in reply to a note from Freddie expressing his sympathy on the passing of Brian Epstein, who had died just four days earlier. The reference to 'Charles' is to John's uncle, Charlie Lennon, who had recently written to John revealing that it was his mother Julia's pregnancy by another man that was the true cause of his parents' break-up, something that Aunt Mimi had always led him to believe was entirely his father's fault.

This astonishing disclosure, combined with the shock of Brian's death and John's new-found spiritual awareness (he had spent the previous weekend in Bangor with the Maharishi), had seemingly dissolved some of his long-held bitterness towards his father and resulted in a more conciliatory approach. Mischievously aware of the impact his letter was likely to have, John had scribbled 'guess who?' on the reverse of the envelope.

Reproduced in 'Daddy Come Home: The True Story Of John Lennon And His Father', Pauline Lennon, Angus & Robertson, 1990.
