Footnotes

  • Provenance :- Colnaghi, 1946, where presumably bought by the present owner's parents and thence by family descent.

Literature :- 'Charles Brooking', David Joel, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 2000, listed as no. 102 B, see pages 134 and 135. Another, slightly different version of this picture is listed as number 102 A, p. 134, illustrated in colour p. 136 (collection National Maritime Museum 1963-26, provenance Sir Bruce Ingram). The spar in the left foreground and two of the ships at sea are in slightly different positions to the version in the NMM.

David Joel writes :- 'There are very few shore scenes by Brooking and those that do exist are based mainly on Willem van der Velde the Younger and Simon de Vleiger. This is an updated version of the van der Velde the Younger in the Lugt collection, Institut Nederlandais, Paris. A similar shore scene (Breakwater at Den Helder) by van der Velde was in a private collection in Los Angeles in 1974. Ref. M.S.Robinson, 'The paintings of the Willem van der Veldes', no. 160, p. 879.'

We would like to thank David Joel for his help in cataloguing this lot.
