Footnotes

  • A sketch of this magnificent miniature appeared at Christie's, London, 14 October 1998, lot 161. Dated 1789, Smart may have executed this sketch after the miniature for another member of the family. The 'W' on the reverse of the frame of the sketch is a tantalising clue to the identity of the sitter.
