    Captain H.S.Monroe was born on 4.11.1877 and was the son of the late Rt Hon J.Monroe, P.C., Judge of the Law Courts, ireland and the late Elizabeth Monroe (Moule); he was educated at Park House, Southborough; Stubbington House, Fareham. He joined H.M.S.Britannia in January 1892 and went to sea as Midshipman on 15.1.1894. He served in the Boer War and was later Senior Officer, Number Four Nore Defence Flotilla. He was promoted to Commander on 30.6.1918.
