“There is a remarkable blending of good qualities in the six-cylinder Austin Sixteen. The effect is to give a vehicle which is exceptionally pleasing to both driver and passengers, though looking at the car superficially it is not at all easy to determine why this should be the case, for it is a straightforward design and of quiet appearance.” - The Autocar, August 12th 1932.
First shown in 1926, Austin’s new six was built initially in 20hp (3,400cc) and 16hp (2,249cc) versions. The Sixteen shared its chassis with the Heavy 12/4, from which it was distinguished by the ‘Austin Six’ script on the radiator and wire wheels, the latter being introduced in 1928. Updated and restyled, the Sixteen lasted in production until 1936.
A professional restorer of vintage and post-vintage motor cars, this Austin Six’s late owner acquired it 25 years ago, keeping the car in storage for 22 years before commencing its restoration in 2001. The vehicle was completed in November 2003 and since its owner’s death has been kept in storage by his widow. Finished in black/red with blue cloth interior, the car features Lucas Bi-Flex headlamps, adjustable rear seat cushion, luggage grid and encased spare wheel at the rear, and has been up-dated with a second electric horn, flashing indicators, ignition isolator switch, and a tow bar. Presented in good condition in every respect, it is offered with sundry invoices, old-style logbook, road fund licence to January 2005, MoT to September 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document. Rugged and dependable, the Austins of the 1930s are among the easiest of contemporary cars to own and maintain and are supported by an enthusiastic owner’s club.
