Lot Details
1982 Fiat X1/9 1500 Coupe
Registration no. BFA 160Y
Chassis no. 0135623
Engine no. 3932709
Conceived by Bertone and introduced in 1972, the FIAT X1/9 was the world’s first really successful mass-produced mid-engined sportscar. Of unitary construction, the X1/9 boasted all-round independent suspension by McPherson struts, and four-wheel disc brakes. Mounted transversely, the 1.3-litre engine was sourced from the FIAT 128 Rally and transmitted its 75bhp via an integral four-speed gearbox. The superb chassis obviously deserved greater power, which materialised in 1978 with the 2nd Series using the Ritmo Strada’s 1,498cc engine and five-speed gearbox. Now with 85bhp available, the X1/9 could top 110mph and reach 60mph in under 11 seconds.
This right-hand drive X1/9 is unusual in being totally standard, retaining its original wheels, trim and mechanicals; even the window stickers in Italian remain intact as do the engine bay decals, etc and period Sharp radio cassette. Cavity wax-injected from new, it has been remarkably well preserved and the chassis has been Waxoyled again recently. The 44,000 mileage total showing on the odometer indicates sparing use and the car drives and handles as it should. Known X1/9 weak points such as gearbox synchros and radiator hoses are in good order. A recent service included new brake discs/pads and distributor. Finished in Champagne Gold with cream/brown interior, this ‘baby Ferrari’ is presented in generally excellent condition and comes complete with snug-fitting Targa top. Offered with MoT to March 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document.
