Lot Details
1912 Triumph 500cc 3 1/2hp Model
Registration no. SV 6872
Engine no. 17667
Early Triumph motorcycles used proprietary engines from Minerva and JAP, however designer Schulte’s own-designed 3 1/2hp engine proved commercially more viable. Triumphs powered by the new engines established their credentials in competition, one of these taking Jack Marshall to Triumph’s first T.T. victory in 1908. The company offered a variety of specifications of the 500cc, single cylinder, side-valve model for the 1912 season, top of the range being the T.T. Roadster, replicating the ‘works’ racing bikes and offered at £60, or just a little more on the “Triumph Gradual Payment System”. This 1912 model is the desirable “free engine” model, a single speed machine with hub clutch, final drive by belt with light pedal assistance if required. It is to original specification in all major respects and is presented in that increasingly sought after ‘oily rag’ condition, having been in the same family since at least 1948 and believed unused on the road since 1952. New tyres have been fitted in more recent years and the machine comes with a leather tool pannier, spare drive belt, 1952 tax disc, old buff log book and a Swansea V5 registration document. It is of course eligible for the prestigious Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Run to Brighton.
