First produced in 1919 by Autoglider Ltd of Great Charles Street, Birmingham, and later by Townsend & Co., the Autoglider was a simple, front-wheel-drive platform scooter powered by a 269cc Union two-stroke engine, ridden in a standing position and retailing for £40. It had a tubular chassis, laminated spring rear suspension, two band brakes and the proprietary engine was mounted above the front wheel. The De Luxe model enjoyed the benefit of a box seat and boasted a top speed of 30mph. It was aimed very much at the soldiers returning from military service in World War I who had tasted for the first time motorised transport and it was designed essentially as economy transport. Like so many of its contemporaries it was doomed to failure, although the concept survived for several decades.

This machine was acquired for the then Montagu Motor Museum in 1957 and was collected from its previous owner by the museum’s Curator of Motorcycles, Graham Walker. It is believed that it was entered in that year’s R.A.C. Sixty Years Jubilee Cavalcade before being put on permanent display within the museum. Condition reflects an older restoration carried out in the 1950’s and this rare and quirky machine now has that delightful patina which is becoming increasingly respected. It is offered with a Swansea V5 registration document. Mechanical condition is not known and, following a period of museum display, careful recommissioning is recommended before tackling the more challenging ride.
