Citroen’s Type C (5CV) was the Gallic equivalent of the Austin 7, made its debut in 1922 and, in a production run lasting almost five years, approximately 88,000 examples left the factory. Powered by a diminutive, four-cylinder, 855cc, side-valve engine, it was sprung by quarter-elliptic leaf springing all round and like its larger stable mates, the Model A and Model B, proved virtually indestructible in service. Even in the 1950’s the 5CV could be seen providing sterling service in Provincial France in what the late John Bolster described as “that state of utter neglect of which only the French are capable”. The 5CV was marketed in various forms including two, three and four seater tourers, light commercials and vans and in later lives their ability to run on a combination of faith, hope and binder twine endeared them to farmers and others with little mechanical ability. The 5CV was built by Opel under licence in Germany where it was nick-named the ‘Laubfrosch’ (tree frog) and was later also assembled by Citroen at Slough, England.
This left-hand drive two-seater is presented in undoubtedly the most popular livery for this model of yellow (citron) and black and is furnished with black leather interior. Driving equipment includes Michelin 12 x 45 balloon wheels and tyres with driver’s side mounted spare wheel, opening windscreen, Jaeger 0-120 speedometer, (ambitious even in kilometres), and a telegauge bulkhead-mounted fuel gauge. At the time of cataloguing the carburettor and manifold and magneto end cap were missing but these may be located by the time of the sale. The usual careful recommissioning is recommended following a period of museum display.
