Jean-Baptiste Duchesne was a sculptor and became a member of the Academy of Saint Luc in 1679. He worked in Paris. It is interesting that the present lot depicts him hiding his hands, the tools of his reade The initials C. D. on the outside of the case probably relate to Charles-Jean-Baptiste (d.1803), son of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph junior, who was also a miniaturist.
