Footnotes

  • A fine and comprehensive survey of Suffolk churches by Isaac Johnson of Woodbridge (surveyor, antiquarian draughtsman and artist, 1754-1835). Johnson had already achieved some renown as an artist, thanks in part to the commissions he received from the publisher John Nichols, when he embarked on his twenty-five year project to make drawings of all the churches in the County. The present fair copies (and those found in another similar volume in the Suffolk Record Office, originally from the collection of F.A. Crisp) were taken from rough sketches, numbering over nine hundred, which remain in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries. The work is divided up according to the 23 Hundreds of the County, with each section preceded by a manuscript contents leaf, and has a full one-page index at the end. (See 'Isaac Johnson of Woodbridge 1754-835 that ingenious artist', Suffolk Record Office, 1979.)
