With characteristic humility ‘W.O.’ was constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of later generations for the products of Bentley Motors Ltd. and it is testimony to the soundness of his engineering design skills, carefully honed in the Doncaster railway engineering shops, that so many of his products have survived. From the humblest of beginnings in a mews garage off Baker St, London, in 1919 the name of Bentley rapidly achieved fame as an exciting fast touring car, well able to compete with the best of European and American sports cars in the tough 1920’s world of motor sport.
Bentley’s domination at Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 is the stuff of legends and behind the wheel of those monsters one can only admire the herculean efforts of such giants as Woolf Barnato, Jack Dunfee, Tim Birkin and Sammy Davis, consistently hurling the British Racing Green sports cars to victory. Early victories were down to the first 3 litre models and in 1927 a 4 1/2 litre engined car was used as the Le Mans practice car. The production 4 1/2 litre model had a four year production run, attracting a clientele who sought fast and comfortable enclosed car motoring as well as those who wished to emulate their racing heroes in sporting models on the open road.
Arguably there is no finer combination of chassis and engine than the 3 litre chassis fitted with the 4 1/2 litre engine. Chassis no. AH1478, originally a 3 litre Speed Model Bentley, first owned by N Ciclitira and registered in January 1926, is fitted with the 4 1/2 litre engine, originally in chassis no. XL3110, a 1928 car originally with saloon coachwork by Freestone Webb.
The chassis is fitted with traditional Vanden Plas four seat tourer coachwork and this car epitomises the true British sports car of the 1920’s. It is nicely presented in British Racing Green livery with comfortably mellowed red leather upholstery. Marchal headlamps are fitted and the car sits correctly on 21in wheels and features a two-piece folding windscreen with aeroscreens. This car was acquired for the Max Lips Collection in 1968 and comes with copies of old style British log books and other correspondence which should enable its original U.K. registration number to be re-issued. Although unused for some time it is felt that careful recommissioning will see this car back on the road and perhaps competing on the track after the fashion of those cars campaigned by Davis, Birkin and the like.
