Matchless’s own description of the top of the range Silver Hawk perhaps sums up the model best in the following terms – “This is the famous four-cylinder Matchless, unquestionably the most fascinating machine to ride that has ever been built. It combines the silence, smoothness and comfort of the most expensive motor-car with a Super-Sports performance. On top gear alone the machine will run from as low as 6 miles per hour to over 80 miles per hour, while the acceleration given by the four-cylinder overhead camshaft engine in conjunction with the four-speed gearbox must be experienced to be believed. This is the only four-cylinder machine in the world equipped with a Spring Frame.”
The V-4 cylinder engine with overhead camshaft valve gear was an engineering masterpiece and this ‘super-bike’ came fully equipped, justifying its price ticket in 1931 of £75 for a solo machine.
This machine, equipped with a Steib Sports single seat sidecar, comes from private enthusiast ownership and when acquired had previously been restored for museum display. Its new owner undertook further work, restoring the bike as closely as possible to original specification, undoing several unhappy alterations that had been made, and preparing the bike for regular use in Club road events. In 1999 the owner was invited to exhibit this machine at the 10th Louis Vuitton Classic at the Hurlingham Club and the bike and owner are photographed together with the late Barry Sheene at that event with Simon le Bon looking on.
Restoration was completed in 1997 and the bike is described as being in good running order and to original specification in all major respects, although the dynamo has sensibly been converted from three to two brush operation with voltage regulator.
Only its engineer-owner’s advancing years bring this very special combination to the market and it is offered with current road fund licence and MoT certificate.
