The Grand Canal, Venice, with the Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo to the left, Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana beyond oil on canvas 58 x 86 cm. (22 7/8 x 33 7/8 in.)
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Belgium
Other paintings from the present collection were sold in these rooms, 12 December, 2000, including An extensive winter landscape by Denis van Alsloot (lot 71, sold for £270,000) and The Four Seasons by Jan Joseph Horemans the Younger (lot 67, sold for £45,000).
Possible attributions to Giuseppe Borsato (1771-1849) and Vincenzo Chilone (1758-1839) have been suggested. While Canaletto painted the same view as the present composition (New York, Robert Lehman Foundation) and the present artist is likely to have seen the earlier master's work, since he includes some similar elements among the vessels on the canal, this view is taken from a little further back, taking in more architecture to the left and right; while the majority of the figures, the other vessels and indeed the entire technique and use of colour are entirely the artist's own.
