Footnotes

  • A fine copy of Thornton's translation of Vergil's Bucolica, this third edition being the first to use the plates by Blake. Concerned by the merit of Blake's contribution Thornton printed a statement beneath the frontispiece "The Illustrations of this English Pastoral are by the famous Blake... who designed and engraved them himself. This is mentioned, as they display less of art than genius, and are much admired by some eminent painters."
