Lot Details
A very rare Worcester coffee can or small mug
circa 1756
of cylindrical shape with a slightly spreading foot and a delicate grooved handle, pencilled in black and painted in bright enamels with a continuous Chinese landscape, a fenced enclosure with a gatehouse and two other buildings, two figures standing by a hut to the left, an island and a boat in the distance, 6.2cm (2 1/2in) (small rim chip, patch of misfiring above the foot),

Footnotes

  • Zorensky catalogue, fig. 40. Provenance, Rous Lench Collection, Christie's, 30 May 1990, lot 451. This is the only known example of this pattern. The addition of the coloured enamels to the pencilled design is hardly ever seen and was probably done to conceal the patch of misfiring to the base. The result is reminiscent of decoration on Staffordshire saltglazed wares.
