Lot Details
1928 Rolls-Royce 20hp Limousine Coachwork by Windover
Registration no. YX 2766
Chassis no. GBM66
Engine no. U31
Changing times eventually forced the abandonment of Rolls-Royce's 'one model' policy, an all-new 20hp car joining the existing 40/50hp Silver Ghost in 1922. The 'Twenty' reflected Royce's interest in contemporary trends within the American automobile industry, incorporating unit construction of engine and gearbox, the latter featuring the modern innovation of a central ball change, and 'Hotchkiss drive' rear axle. The engine, Rolls-Royce's first with overhead valves, was a six-cylinder unit displacing 3,127cc.
Manufactured in 1928, this example of Rolls-Royce's successful smaller companion to the Silver Ghost has the four-wheel, servo-assisted brakes and righthand-change, four-speed gearbox introduced on the 20hp model in 1925. The seven-seater limousine coachwork is by the respected firm of Windover, originally of Huntingdon but from 1924 based in Northwest London. 'YX 2766's accompanying (copy) original logbook records its first owner as Sir William Noble of Kirkley Hall, Ponteland, while the final (4th change) entry dated 4th January 1935 records His Grace The Duke of Portland as its owner at that time. The private vendor advises us that the vehicle was purchased in dilapidated condition in 1979 and restored over the next eight years. The chassis was stripped and the body removed and dismantled. All rotten wood was replaced and the original skin re-fitted after repair. Interior fittings were similarly refurbished and the trim re-upholstered. Sensible updates include a full-flow oil filter and flashing indicators, while the original main tools including wheelbrace, oil gun and jack are retained. The car features dual side-mounts, cocktail cabinet with glasses and decanter, and comes with assorted spares and a Brooks three-case trunk in excellent condition. Finished in grey/black with red leather interior, 'YX 2766' is presented in excellent condition throughout and offered with VCC Dating Certificate and current MoT.
