  • Charles succeeded his father George, 12th Marquess in 1800. In the same year, he married Anne, daughter of John Andrews esq. of Shotney Hall, Northumberland. In 1839 he assumed the additional surname of Burroughs. He was succeeded by his son John in 1843.
    The present lot compares well with Cosway's portrait of Louis-Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, painted c.1805, cf. Stephen Lloyd; Richard and Maria Cosway, Edinburgh, 1995, ill. pl.92, no.178.
