Footnotes

  • The crude enamelled wares from the end of the 18th century were of little interest to Bernard Watney who acquired just a few examples. Some white blanc de chine ware from 100 years before was decorated in bold colours, but it was mostly old-fashioned blue and white that attracted the attention of a new generation of china painters. Similar clobbering on Worcester and other English porcelain indicates that this type of overpainting began around 1780. A wider range of colours was used in the 19th century.
