A Wedgwood and Bentley black basalt vase
circa 1775
with bifurcated twin handles terminating in crisply modelled satyr mask terminals, the neck with engine turned bands, the foot fluted, standing on a square plinth moulded with anthemion bands, applied with an oval medallion depicting a sacrifice to Aesculapius, within the border of boldly modelled swags of fabric hung through rings on the shoulders , 35cm., Wedgwood and Bentley Etrurua in wafer of base (cover lacking, one section of each handle broken and restuck)

Saleroom notices

  • Please note, in addition to damage mentioned in the catalogue there is a fine crack to the plinth and another fine crack with an assoicated filled chip. It is also possible that the broken sections of the handle are replacements.
