Charles Robert Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft, 1901
A similar piece cast with tulips and set with turquoise was exhibited in 'Charles Robert Ashbee and The Guild of Handicraft', Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, 17 Jan -28 Feb 1981. See exhibition catalogue fig D48.
An almost identical design can be found amongst Ashbees drawings and seems to be one of a series of designs for cups and covers, all showing slightly varying decoration (see details left). See plate 74, 'Ashbee: Modern English Silverworks', Essex House Press, 1909. The cup on this plate only differs from the above lot in the shape of the foot, which in the drawing is more elongated. It may be that clients could customise shapes or pair one decoration with a differently shaped cup, to suit their personal requirements.
