Footnotes

  • Tolkien attended King Edward's School, Birmingham. In these pamphlets are entries which name Tolkien as a member of the Debating Society, arguing cases such as "This house expresses its sympathy with the objects and its admiration of the tactics of the Militant Suffragette" (November 1909) with excerpts from Tolkien's speech, which he angled from a Zoological point of view and was apparently "a good humourous speech".
Tolkien was editor of the Chronicle from May to July 1911. He was also Debating Secretary 1910-11 and Librarian 1911, amongst other honours.
