François Victor Valtat, the father of Louis Valtat, owned a property in Eauplet, a suburb of Rouen located at the edge of the Seine and, consequently, Valtat spent a considerable part of his youth in the city and it's surround. In 1894 a large circus was built on the Boulevard Beauvoisine and this backdrop provided a source of inspiration for Valtat, resulting in several works focusing on fun fairs. This influence is an intrinsic factor within the present work with its colourful background of vibrant circus activity and tented stands. The general movement of the figures towards the attractions highlights the pristine but clustered group of empty cafe tables awaiting the return of the circus visitors.
