ELGAR (EDWARD)
Printed booklet The Apostles... An Interpretation by C.V. Gorton, inscribed by Elgar on the half-title: "Edward Speyer: with kindest regards from Edward Elgar/Oct 8: 1903/this is the first copy of this", original oatmeal wrappers, very minor crease, Novello & Co, 8vo, 8 October 1903

Footnotes

  • Canon Gorton was founder of the Morecambe Festival, for which Elgar had written his settings from the Greek Anthology, and with whom he corresponded during composition of The Apostles. This booklet was published by Novello's at Elgar's behest, in order to provide the oratorio with an Anglican interpretation. Elgar told Alfred Littleton: "I have 'made' the libretto myself & there are some people... who are only too anxious to pull it to pieces and say I have treated it solely from the R. Catholic point of view... Canon Gorton writes clearly & beautifully..." (31 July 1903).
