Lot Details
NELSON (HORATIO)
Autograph letter signed ("Nelson & Bronte"), to William Churchey, thanking him for his good wishes for the continuance of the peace ("...I hope will be realized but I doubt ever Buonapartes laying down the Sword he rules France with it..."), one page, 4to, autograph address leaf (franking signature removed), with a carte-de-visite portrait, some very slight fading and time-staining where exposed, trimmed at the edges for framing, professional repairs, Merton, 2 October 1802

Footnotes

  • NELSON SUMS UP NAPOLEON, with an aphorism worthy of future dictionaries of quotation: "I doubt ever Buonapartes laying down the Sword he rules France with it". The short-lived Treaty of Amiens had been signed that March. This letter does not appear in The Letters and Dispatches of Lord Nelson, edited by Nicolas, and appears to be unpublished. Nelson's correspondent was probably a son of Walter Churchey of Brecon, the friend of John Wesley: "Walter Churchey the elder was a poet of some ability... and when the great Admiral Nelson visited Brecon, he sang his praises in an ode which the gallant seaman suitably acknowledged in a letter of thanks" (T. Jones, History of the County of Brecknock, ii, 1909, p.103).
