Lot Details
1935 Bentley 3 1/2 Litre Two Door Coupé de Ville Coachwork by Park Ward
Registration no. FSJ 263
Chassis no. B135EJ
Engine no. V7BK
Launched in 1933, the first of the ‘Derby’ Bentleys continued the marque’s sporting associations in a manner even more refined than previously, the new model fast earning the name ‘The Silent Sports Car’. W.O. Bentley himself acknowledged that the Rolls-Royce-built 3 1/2 litre was the finest Bentley ever to bear his name. Essentially an owner-driver sports car, the 3 1/2 litre Bentley found favour with such notable drivers as Briggs S Cunningham, N S Embiricos, Eddie Hall, Wolf Barnato and Capt. Sir Malcolm Campbell.

This car was delivered new in November 1935 to the then Lord Brocket. It had previously been exhibited on Park Ward’s Stand no.35 at the London Motor Show. The exceedingly elegant and rare Coupé de Ville coachwork was then, as now, presented in two-tone grey livery and featured Park Ward’s own patent de Ville extension. In 1996/99 this car was the subject of a painstaking restoration, much of which has been photographically recorded, specialists involved including Overtons, Barton Coach Trimmers and Fiennes Engineering. Since acquisition by the present owner in June 2000 the car has seen only occasional use but has been carefully maintained and stabled with a most impressive collection of comparable motor cars.

The elegant coachwork is superbly furnished with grey leather ‘sunburst’ upholstery with matching grey carpets. Driving equipment includes centre spotlight, twin Lucas horns and wing mirrors, the spare wheel being housed discreetly in the spacious boot.

This elegant thoroughbred is offered with a history file, old style buff logbook, Swansea V5 registration document, current road fund licence and MoT certificate. The car is illustrated in Johnnie Green’s standard work, Bentley – Fifty Years of the Marque.
