A Sarmatian gold pommel

Of hammered sheet gold repoussé work, composed of three interlocking encircled quadrupeds, possibly sheep or cattle, their hooves, fleeces and ears recessed for white inlays, some of which remain, the triangular centre is set with red glass, the interior remains filled with bitumen, probably for attachment to a staff, 1½in. (4cm.) high, 1¾in.(4.5cm.) diam.
