"In the twilight of their coachbuilding years, James Young had with these cars reached the pinnacle of excellence." - Martin Bennett, Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
Despite the popularity of the standard steel bodywork, introduced when production of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars resumed after WW2, independent coachbuilders continued to offer alternatives. Arguably the most stylish were those produced to clothe the Bentley Continental which, of course, was only ever available with bespoke coachwork. The Continental began life exclusively as a two-door car, but in 1957 H J Mulliner was sanctioned to build a four-door design on the S1 Continental chassis, this elegant six-light model being known as the 'Flying Spur'. James Young, by then part of the Jack Barclay Group, responded with its own equally elegant four-light, four-door saloon. James Young's basic design was later revised in six-light style, continuing on the V8-engined S2 and S3 Continental chassis virtually unaltered apart from changes made to accommodate the latter's quartet of headlamps.
The very first car erected on the Bentley S3 Continental chassis, 'BC2XA' comes with a most substantial history file containing assorted invoices covering the past three decades back to 1970, including ones dating from 1981 and 1982 relating to the car's restoration at that time by R C Creech, of Anerley, South East London and Car Care, of Belvedere, Kent. Photographs, correspondence, road test reports and assorted MoTs from 1982 onwards also are included. Finished in Caribbean Blue with grey leather-upholstered interior, the latter benefiting from the addition of air conditioning in 1975, the car is described by the private vendor as in generally excellent condition. It is offered with road fund licence to June 2003, MoT to August 2003 and Swansea V5 registration document.
