This immaculate Indian Four dates from 1933, the year after Indian made the first major changes to the four-cylinder motorcycle it had acquired as a result of purchasing Ace in 1927. For 1932 the Four was re-styled along the lines of Indian's other models, gaining a saddle tank, new mudguards and a stronger front fork, and would continue almost unchanged for 1933 and '34.
This example was purchased in the late 1990s by Ray Chriss, at that time President of the Indian Motorcycle Club of GB. The machine was acquired directly from Alan Forbes of Edinburgh-based Motolux, the main Indian dealer in Europe, having been previously the property of the Canadian Vintage Museum in Ontario. The machine comes with a letter from the Museum's proprietor, Chris Simons, confirming its matching numbers and authenticity. A recognised expert in the renovation of Indian Fours, Ray Chriss undertook the restoration of the cycle parts himself, while entrusting the engine rebuild to Indian specialist Eric Neave, of Neave Engineering.
The engine was completely rebuilt, the crankcases being crack-tested and the bottom end modified to incorporate extra crankshaft oil-ways to achieve an all-pressure feed, the latter being a recognised Indian Four up-grade. New pistons, rods and (unleaded-compatible) valves were fitted, the oil pump overhauled and the gearbox rebuilt with new pinions. The clutch too has benefited from 'modern' technology, being fitted with neoprene inserts to the plates for reduced drag and smoother take-up.
After completion in 2000, the machine was purchased from Ray Chriss by the vendor and is presented today in excellent condition in every respect. It is offered with copy 1946 Canadian sales book recording its sale at that time, current MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
