Alexandre Benois was a distinguished painter, art historian and museum director, as well as a famous stage designer. Among his most popular works are scenes of St.Petersburg and its environs. As a mature artist he lived in France and often painted its landscapes and architectural treasures. Madame de Maintenon, whose salon the artist has chosen to depict, was the 2nd wife of Louis XIV.
